Countertop template readiness before measurement checklist

A pre-template countertop checklist for installed and adjusted base cabinets, secure island and supports, level and plane, finished panels and fillers, wall and backsplash conditions, exact slab or surface selection, seam and pattern plan, edge and overhang, brackets, sink and cooktop models, faucet and accessory holes, appliance clearances, waterfall and end conditions, plumbing and electrical coordination, field changes, access, fabrication tolerances, responsibility for final verification, and written release before irreversible cutting.

Base cabinets, island, panels, fillers, end conditions, supports, and appliances affecting template are installed, secured, level, and adjusted

Critical item

The template should represent the final stable support geometry.

Material, slab, finish, thickness, edge, pattern direction, seams, overhangs, waterfall panels, and visible surfaces are approved

Critical item

Fabrication should follow a documented aesthetic and structural layout.

Exact sink, cooktop, faucet, dispenser, air switch, filter, outlet, and accessory models and hole positions are verified

Critical item

Cutouts and holes should use current manufacturer templates and approved field relationships.

Walls, corners, windows, trim, backsplash substrate, ranges, refrigerators, dishwashers, panels, and adjacent finishes are in final measurable condition

Critical item

Template should account for realistic out-of-square conditions and required appliance gaps without unsafe field alteration.

Support, brackets, sink anchorage, seams, utilities, shutoffs, receptacles, ventilation, heat, and installation access are coordinated

Critical item

Stone or surface loads and openings should remain supported and serviceable.

Field measurements, assumptions, exclusions, change freeze, owner approvals, responsibility, and fabrication release are written

Critical item

Irreversible fabrication should begin only after measured conditions and selected details are signed off.

Use immediately before digital or physical templating. Fabrication should not proceed from unstable cabinets, missing panels, unapproved appliance models, unresolved seams, or verbal cutout assumptions. Do not energize exposed work, open or test gas piping, pressure-test plumbing, operate incomplete appliances, enter unsafe framing or attics, or modify structure without authorization. Licensed trades and the AHJ control required tests and approvals.
