A homeowner review checklist for confirming that heating and cooling loads use the actual home, climate, envelope, infiltration, ventilation, duct location, room-by-room needs, design temperatures, internal gains, and equipment performance before HVAC or heat-pump equipment is ordered.

Use after the contractor provides a load calculation and before final equipment selection. This checklist does not recalculate Manual J; it checks whether the inputs and output are credible and traceable. Do not open energized equipment, handle refrigerant, defeat safety controls, or enter unsafe attics or crawlspaces. Require licensed or qualified HVAC and electrical work where applicable.

  • Approved HVAC design, adopted state and local mechanical and electrical code, permit and inspection conditions, utility or rebate requirements, signed scope, and exact equipment, refrigerant, duct, condensate, control, and accessory manufacturer instructions
  • Current ACCA Manual J or other accepted project-specific residential load method where required
  • Manufacturer extended-performance data for the selected equipment
  • Tools

  • Written proposals, load calculation, equipment selections, duct and control plans, permit, and approved changes
  • Equipment data, commissioning forms, airflow and static-pressure records, refrigerant records, and electrical test documentation
  • Camera, thermometer, owner-safe observations, and qualified trade instruments used by competent personnel
