HVAC duct evaluation before equipment replacement checklist

A pre-installation duct checklist for accessible condition, leakage, sizing, static-pressure risk, return paths, room airflow, insulation, supports, contamination, filter arrangement, abandoned ducts, and repair scope before new HVAC equipment is connected to an unsuitable distribution system.

Accessible ducts, plenums, boots, joints, supports, and insulation are surveyed

Use before equipment order or installation when existing ducts will remain. ENERGY STAR advises evaluating ducts because leakage and poor airflow can waste energy, reduce comfort, and shorten equipment life. Do not open energized equipment, handle refrigerant, defeat safety controls, or enter unsafe attics or crawlspaces. Require licensed or qualified HVAC and electrical work where applicable.
