Kitchen backsplash tile installation checklist

The substrate should be sound, clean, suitably flat, compatible with the setting material, and ready for the selected tile and service conditions.

Review repairs, primer or preparation, cabinet and countertop lines, focal points, pattern direction, starting points, trim, and how the layout terminates at walls, windows, and appliances.

- Tile installed over loose paint or damaged drywall

- Layout creates very small slivers at visible edges

- Pattern changes unexpectedly at corners

- Countertop or cabinet misalignment was hidden rather than discussed

Tile alignment, joint width, pattern, edge trim, and cut quality should match the approved design and normal workmanship expectations for the selected material.

Stand back and sight horizontal and vertical lines. Inspect cuts at cabinets, windows, outlets, switches, corners, and exposed ends. Confirm factory edges or trim are used where intended.

- Wandering rows or inconsistent joint widths

- Chipped cuts around devices

- Exposed unfinished tile edges

- Pattern not centered at the primary viewing area

Setting materials, coverage, cure time, tile handling, and substrate compatibility should follow the selected installation system. Tiles should not be loose, drummy, or excessively lipped.

Visually inspect the surface under side lighting and gently tap representative tiles without damaging them. Check corners, large-format pieces, trim, and areas near heat or moisture sources.

- Loose or hollow-sounding tiles

- Excessive lippage at adjacent pieces

- Adhesive used outside its allowed tile size or location

- Tile disturbed before setting material cured

Electrical boxes, device extensions, covers, fasteners, plumbing penetrations, and clearances should comply with the adopted code, listed products, and appliance instructions.

Confirm devices are secure and flush with the finished surface, covers sit flat, screws do not damage tile, and penetrations are neatly finished. Test GFCI protection and devices where applicable.

- Devices pulled forward with loose or improvised spacers

- Cover plates rock on tile edges

- Tile cut exposes oversized openings

- Range or appliance clearance conflicts with the finished backsplash

Grout and sealant should be compatible with the tile system, installed after required cure periods, and used at changes of plane or dissimilar materials where the selected method requires movement accommodation.

Inspect grout color and fullness, corners, countertop joint, cabinet joint, exposed ends, haze, scratches, pinholes, and sealant tooling. Confirm any required sealer and care instructions were provided.

- Rigid grout cracked at inside corners

- Grout joints are low, blotchy, or incomplete

- Sealant smeared over tile faces

- Persistent grout haze or scratched surfaces
