Sewer lateral repair before backfill checklist

A pre-backfill sewer lateral checklist for permit and utility coordination, excavation safety, pipe material and diameter, bedding, slope and alignment, joints and transitions, cleanouts, building connection, testing or inspection, trench water, warning tape, restoration limits, and photographic evidence before the repair disappears underground.

6 items to check

Inspection progress0 of 6
0%

Permit, utility marks, sewer ownership boundary, and approved route are confirmed

Critical item

The repair should be authorized and coordinated with utilities and the sewer authority.

Excavation, access, groundwater, adjacent structures, and worker protection are controlled

Critical item

The trench should follow applicable excavation-safety requirements and avoid undermining structures or utilities.

Pipe, bedding, support, alignment, and slope match the approved installation

Critical item

The line should have uniform support and drainage without bellies, point loads, or damaging deflection.

Joints, couplings, cleanouts, connection, and material transitions are correct

Critical item

Connections should be compatible, restrained or supported as required, and accessible where intended.

Required test, camera, dye, or authority inspection passes before backfill

Critical item

The applicable acceptance method should be completed with corrections visible.

Bedding cover, warning or tracer provisions, compaction plan, and as-built photos are approved

Backfill should protect pipe and support future restoration without erasing route evidence.

Use after a sewer lateral is installed or repaired but before bedding and trench backfill conceal it. Never enter an unprotected trench; inspection must be performed from safe locations by qualified personnel. Do not enter contaminated, structurally unsafe, energized, confined, or oxygen-deficient areas; do not open pressurized systems or handle sewage. Use qualified plumbing, electrical, remediation, environmental, and structural professionals where applicable.
