Smart thermostat installation checklist

Final inspection for thermostat compatibility, safe wiring, equipment configuration, sensors, heating and cooling tests, account ownership, privacy, schedules, documentation, and fallback operation.

4 items to check

Inspection progress0 of 4
0%

HVAC system, voltage, wiring, power supply, and accessories are compatible

Critical item

The thermostat should be approved for the equipment type, control voltage, stages, heat pump or auxiliary functions, common-wire or power accessory, humidification, zoning, and connected devices.

Wiring, terminals, wall opening, mounting, and equipment settings are complete

Critical item

Conductors, terminals, unused wires, wall opening, backplate, equipment configuration, and power restoration should follow the thermostat and HVAC instructions without shorts or concealed damage.

Heating, cooling, fan, stages, auxiliary functions, and sensors pass testing

Critical item

Every connected operating mode should start, stop, stage, and report correctly without short cycling, simultaneous conflicting calls, equipment fault, or abnormal delay beyond the system instructions.

Owner account, permissions, privacy, schedules, alerts, and fallback instructions are complete

The owner should control the device and understand schedules, occupancy features, utility programs, data sharing, alerts, manual operation, battery or outage behavior, and warranty support.

Use this checklist after a smart thermostat installation. HVAC control wiring and equipment compatibility can be system-specific; line-voltage systems and complex controls require qualified personnel.
