Structural Connections Inspection

Bolted connections must use correct bolt grade, size, and number per plans. Bolts must be properly tightened. Washers required under nuts.

1. Verify bolt size matches plans (typically 1/2" to 3/4" for residential)

2. Count bolts at each connection — must match structural plans

3. Check that all bolts have washers under the nut

4. Verify bolts are tight — try to turn nut by hand, should not move

5. Check for proper edge distance — bolt center minimum 1.5x bolt diameter from edge

6. Verify bolt grade markings on head match specifications

7. Check for snug-tight condition on all connections

- Wrong bolt size or grade

- Missing bolts at connections

- No washers (nut pulls through wood)

- Bolts not tightened

- Bolts too close to edge (wood splits)

- Missing connections at critical points

Simpson Strong-Tie or equivalent metal connectors required at critical connections. Hold-downs resist uplift at shear walls. Hurricane ties at roof-to-wall connections.

1. Check joist hangers at all joist-to-beam and joist-to-ledger connections

2. Verify correct nails in joist hangers (must be joist hanger nails — not drywall screws)

3. Check hold-down anchors at ends of shear walls (continuous load path from roof to foundation)

4. Verify hurricane/seismic ties at roof-to-wall connections

5. Check post bases and post caps at all column connections

6. Verify all hardware is rated for the application (stamp or label visible)

7. Check that no nails are missing from any connector (every hole should be filled)

- Wrong nails in joist hangers (deck screws or drywall screws instead of hanger nails)

- Missing hold-downs at shear walls (uplift failure in high winds)

- Missing hurricane ties at roof (roof blows off in storm)

- Empty nail holes in connectors (each missing nail reduces capacity)

- Wrong connector model for the application

- Connectors installed upside down or backwards
