Standard
Panel must have 36" working clearance, proper labeling, no double-tapped breakers, and no recalled brands.
How to check
1. Verify 36" clear workspace in front of panel (no storage)
2. Check for recalled panels: Federal Pacific (FPE/Stab-Lok), Zinsco, Pushmatic
3. Open panel — look for scorching, melting, or discoloration
4. Check for double-tapped breakers (two wires on one breaker)
5. Verify all circuits are labeled clearly and accurately
6. Check for open knockouts (holes in panel box)
7. Verify main breaker size matches electrical service
8. Check for aluminum wiring connections (silver-colored wires)
9. Verify adequate capacity for current and future needs
Common problems
- Recalled panel brands (known failure-to-trip — fire hazard)
- Double-tapped breakers (loose connections, overheating)
- Scorching or melting inside panel (overloaded or loose connection)
- Blocked panel access (can't reach in emergency)
- Missing circuit labels (can't identify circuits)
- Open knockouts (fire and shock hazard)
- Panel at capacity (no room for additions)
