- Shell dimensions deviating from the design, particularly floor levels and wall plumbness, affecting tiling and water depth accuracy

Per EN 15836 (reinforced PVC liners) and EN 13967 (bituminous tanking), the pool waterproofing system must provide a continuous, watertight barrier. Tiled pools require a bonded waterproof membrane applied to the concrete shell per the system manufacturer's instructions before tiling. Liner pools must use materials complying with EN 15836-2 with adequate thickness, UV resistance, and chemical resistance for pool water conditions. All waterproofing must be compatible with the pool water chemistry and any chemical treatment system in use.

Per EN 16713-1, pool water circulation systems must achieve the required turnover period for the pool type and volume. Filtration must comply with EN 16713-2 (sand filters) or EN 16713-3 (other filter media). The hydraulic design must ensure uniform water circulation with no dead zones, achieved through correctly positioned inlets and outlets per EN 15288-1. Pump and pipework must be sized per hydraulic calculations to deliver the required flow rate against the total system head loss. Anti-entrapment measures on suction fittings must comply with EN 13451-3.

1. Verify the filtration system capacity and turnover rate calculations — the pump and filter must be sized to achieve the turnover period specified for the pool type per EN 16713-1

2. Inspect inlet fitting positions and confirm they are distributed to achieve even circulation throughout the pool volume, with return inlets positioned to avoid dead zones

3. Check all suction fittings (main drain, skimmer) for compliance with EN 13451-3 anti-entrapment requirements — verify covers are secured, correctly rated, and not damaged

- Pump undersized for the total system head loss, resulting in insufficient flow rate and inadequate turnover of the pool volume

- Main drain covers not compliant with EN 13451-3 anti-entrapment requirements, posing a serious safety risk

- Pipework not pressure-tested before burial, with leaks only discovered after landscaping or deck construction is complete

- Dead zones in the pool volume due to poorly positioned inlet fittings, leading to localised poor water quality

Per EN 15288-2 and EN 16713-1, pool water must be treated to maintain safe microbiological and chemical quality. Disinfection systems must maintain a measurable residual disinfectant level throughout the pool volume. Chlorine-based systems must maintain free chlorine levels within the range specified by the national health authority (typically 0.5–2.0 mg/l for public pools). pH must be controlled within 7.0–7.4 for chlorine systems to ensure effective disinfection. Automatic dosing and monitoring systems per EN 16713-1 are required for public pools.

1. Verify the water treatment system components are installed per the design — check dosing pumps, chemical storage, injection points, and control panels against the specification

2. Confirm the automatic dosing controller is calibrated and operational, with probes correctly positioned in the circulation pipework downstream of the filter and upstream of treated water return

- Incompatible chemicals stored adjacent to each other without separation, creating a risk of toxic gas release

- pH not maintained within the effective range for the disinfectant, severely reducing its bactericidal effectiveness

- No flow interlock on the dosing system, allowing chemical dosing to continue when circulation has stopped and causing localised high concentrations

Per EN 15288-1 and EN 13451 series, swimming pools must incorporate appropriate safety features. Pool access ladders and steps must comply with EN 13451-2. Starting platforms must comply with EN 13451-10. Depth markings must be clearly displayed per EN 15288-1. For domestic pools, safety barriers must comply with EN 13451-6 (pool covers) or national building regulations for fencing. Anti-slip surfaces must be provided on pool surrounds, steps, and changing areas. Emergency equipment and signage must be provided for public pools per EN 15288-2.

1. Verify pool depth markings are correct, clearly visible, and positioned at the pool edge and on the pool wall at the shallow end, deep end, and at any gradient change per EN 15288-1

2. Inspect access ladders and steps for compliance with EN 13451-2 — check handrail dimensions, step tread depth, anti-slip surface, and structural fixings

3. Confirm safety barriers (fencing, pool covers, or alarms) comply with the applicable standard — for domestic pools, verify barrier height, gate self-closing mechanism, and child-resistant latches

4. Test anti-slip surfaces on the pool surround, steps, and wet areas using a pendulum slip resistance tester or equivalent, verifying results meet the minimum requirements

5. For public pools, verify the provision of rescue equipment (reaching poles, throwing aids, spine boards) and that emergency signage is correctly displayed per EN 15288-2

- Depth markings incorrect or poorly visible, failing to warn swimmers of sudden depth changes

- Pool fencing or barrier gates not self-closing or not latching, defeating the purpose of the child safety barrier

- Anti-slip surfaces on pool surrounds degraded or algae-covered, creating a slip hazard in wet conditions

- Access ladder fixings corroded or loose in the pool deck, creating a structural failure risk under load

Per EN 15288-1, pool surrounds must provide a safe, hygienic, and slip-resistant surface. Drainage must be designed to prevent pool surround water from draining back into the pool. The surround must be graded to fall away from the pool edge or towards drainage channels. Materials must be durable, resistant to pool water chemicals, frost-resistant where exposed to exterior conditions per EN ISO 10545-12, and must achieve the required slip resistance per EN 16165. Overflow channels and gratings must comply with EN 13451-1 for structural and safety requirements.

1. Verify the pool surround gradient falls away from the pool edge or towards drainage channels, preventing contaminated surface water from entering the pool

2. Inspect the surround material for compliance with the specification — check slip resistance classification, frost resistance (for outdoor pools), and chemical resistance to pool water
