Vinyl & Composite Fence Installation Checklist

Follow the same site preparation as wood fencing: confirm property lines from survey, check zoning setback requirements, call 811 for utility locates, and obtain a fence permit if required. With vinyl/composite fencing, panel sizes are fixed (typically 6 or 8 feet), so plan the layout to match standard panel widths and minimize cutting. For sloped terrain, determine whether panels will be stepped (stair-stepped) or racked (angled to follow the slope) — not all vinyl systems support racking.

1. Review property survey and mark property boundaries

2. Check zoning setback and height requirements

3. Call 811 for utility locates — wait for all marks before digging

4. Obtain fence permit if required

5. Measure total fence run and divide by panel width to determine number of panels

6. Plan post locations at exact panel-width intervals

7. Assess terrain slope — determine if panels will be stepped or racked

8. Verify the selected vinyl/composite system supports racking if needed for slopes

- Not accounting for fixed panel sizes — leaves awkward partial panels at the end

- Trying to rack panels on a system designed only for stepping — panels do not fit correctly

- Forgetting to include gate posts and gate width in the layout calculation

- Not checking that post spacing matches panel width exactly — even 1/2 inch off prevents assembly

Set vinyl/composite fence posts in concrete at the exact panel-width spacing — use an actual panel as a spacer between posts to ensure precise fit. Posts must be plumb on two adjacent faces and at a consistent height. Dig holes 30 inches deep minimum (below frost line in cold climates) and 10-12 inches in diameter. Many vinyl post systems use an aluminum or steel internal reinforcement insert — install per manufacturer instructions for structural support.

1. Dig post holes 30 inches minimum depth, 10-12 inches diameter

2. Place 2-3 inches of gravel at the bottom of each hole

3. Set the first corner or end post plumb and brace

4. Use an actual fence panel as a spacer to set the exact distance to the next post

5. Set each subsequent post using the panel spacer method

6. Install internal metal reinforcement insert if provided by manufacturer

7. Verify all posts are plumb on two faces and at consistent height

8. Pour concrete around posts, crown top to shed water, allow 24-48 hours to cure

Assemble panels per manufacturer instructions. Most vinyl fence systems use a bottom rail that slides into routed slots in the posts, followed by pickets that insert into the rail channels, topped with a top rail that slides over the picket tops and into the post slots. Some systems use pre-assembled panels that slide into post channels as a unit. Apply PVC cement or adhesive at connections if specified by the manufacturer. Ensure panels are level and fully seated in post channels.

1. Slide bottom rail into the post slots or brackets

2. Insert pickets into the bottom rail channel one at a time (or slide pre-assembled panel)

3. Attach top rail over picket tops and into post slots

4. Check that all pickets are fully seated in both top and bottom rails

5. Verify panel is level by checking the top rail with a level

6. Apply PVC cement at connections if manufacturer requires it

7. Ensure rails are fully seated into post slots — should not pull out by hand

8. Check for any visible gaps between rails and posts

- Forcing panels into posts that are spaced too tight — cracks the post or rail

- Not seating pickets fully in rail channels — pickets fall out or rattle in wind

- Skipping adhesive where manufacturer requires it — panels detach in high winds

- Assembling on hot days when vinyl expands — panels too tight in winter when vinyl contracts

Gate posts must be reinforced for the additional stress of a swinging gate. Use larger posts (5x5 instead of 4x4) or install an internal steel or aluminum reinforcement sleeve inside standard posts. Set gate posts deeper than line posts (36 inches minimum) with extra concrete. Install heavy-duty hinges rated for the gate weight. Check gate swing clearance — the gate must clear the ground and any slope. Install self-closing hinges if required by code (pool fencing per ASTM F1346).

1. Verify gate posts are reinforced (larger post or internal steel sleeve)

2. Confirm gate posts are set at least 36 inches deep with full concrete

3. Mount hinges to gate frame first, then to the post

4. Check gate hangs level and plumb when closed

5. Verify gate swings freely without rubbing on posts or dragging on ground

6. Install latch hardware at comfortable height (36-42 inches)

7. Install self-closing mechanism if required (pool fencing code requirement)

8. Test latch operation from both sides of the gate

- Gate posts not reinforced — lean inward over time from gate weight

- Gate sags — diagonal brace needed inside gate frame, running from bottom hinge to top latch corner

- Gate too wide (over 5 feet) — consider double gate or wider post reinforcement

- Not accounting for ground slope — gate drags when opened across sloped ground

Install post caps on all posts to complete the finished appearance and prevent water, insects, and debris from entering the hollow post interior. Most caps are press-fit or glued with PVC cement. Install any decorative trim pieces, such as rail end covers or base trim at the bottom of posts. Verify all snap-together connections are fully engaged and secure. Solar-lit or decorative caps should be tested for function before final installation.

1. Clean the top of each post to remove dust and debris

2. Apply PVC cement to the inside of the cap (if adhesive-mount type)

3. Press cap firmly onto post top until fully seated

4. Verify cap is level and centered on the post

5. Install rail end covers or decorative trim pieces at post-to-rail connections

6. Check all snap-fit connections are fully engaged (firm push until click)

7. Install base trim at post bottoms if provided

8. Test solar post cap lights for proper function before gluing

- Caps not glued — blow off in high winds, exposing post interior to water

- Water inside hollow posts — causes internal mold and weakens the post from inside

- Wrong cap size purchased — vinyl post dimensions vary by manufacturer

- Decorative trim not fully snapped in — falls off and creates gaps for water entry

Walk the entire fence line and inspect for consistent alignment, level panels, and plumb posts. Verify all panel connections are secure and no pickets are loose or misaligned. Check gate operation and latch function. Verify no gaps exist between the bottom of the fence and the ground that would allow animals to pass through (add a gravel board or adjust bottom rail if needed). Clean any dirt or concrete splatter from the vinyl surfaces.

1. Walk both sides of the entire fence checking alignment from end to end

2. Verify all panels are level using a 4-foot level on the top rail

3. Check all posts for plumb with a level

4. Verify all pickets are seated and none are loose or crooked

5. Test gate operation — opens, closes, and latches smoothly

6. Check for ground gaps larger than 2 inches — fill with gravel or add trim board

7. Clean concrete splatter and dirt from vinyl surfaces with soap and water

8. Take photos of completed fence for permit inspection and warranty documentation

- Wavy fence line visible from the side — posts not perfectly aligned, may need adjustment

- Panels not level — uneven post heights, shim under rails if adjustment is not possible

- Ground gaps allowing small animals through — install a gravel board or bury hardware cloth

- Concrete residue on vinyl — clean immediately, becomes permanent if allowed to set
