Low-Voltage Wiring Inspection

Per IEC 60364 / EN 50174, low-voltage system layout must be planned with consideration for camera coverage angles, doorbell visibility and reach, intercom placement at entry points, and thermostat location away from direct sunlight, drafts, and heat sources. Cable runs should be planned to minimize length and avoid electromagnetic interference sources.

1. Review camera positions for complete coverage without blind spots

2. Verify doorbell placement at 1200-1500 mm height, visible from approach

3. Check thermostat location on interior wall, away from windows, vents, and direct sunlight

4. Confirm intercom stations are at logical entry/exit points

5. Plan cable routes from each device to the central hub or panel

6. Identify power source locations for each subsystem

- Camera blind spots at entry points or property corners

- Thermostat placed on exterior wall or near heat sources giving false readings

- Doorbell placement too high or obscured by screen door

- No central location planned for networking equipment and patch panel

Per TIA-568 and IEC 60364 / EN 50174, cable types must match the application: Cat5e or Cat6 for IP cameras and network devices, 18/2 or 16/2 for doorbell transformers, 18/5 or 18/8 for thermostat wiring (extra conductors for heat pump or multi-stage systems). All cables should be rated for in-wall use (CM, CMR, or CMP rating).

1. Verify Cat5e/Cat6 cable for all IP cameras and network runs

2. Confirm doorbell wire is 18/2 or 16/2 gauge, appropriate for transformer voltage

3. Check thermostat wire has sufficient conductors (18/5 minimum, 18/8 for heat pumps)

4. Verify all cables have appropriate fire rating for installation location (CM/CMR/CMP)

5. Confirm outdoor cable runs use UV-rated or direct-burial rated cable

6. Check that cable lengths do not exceed maximum run distances (100m for Cat5e/Cat6)

- Cat5e used where Cat6 is needed for PoE+ cameras

- Thermostat wire with too few conductors for the HVAC system

- Non-rated cable used inside walls (fire code violation)

- Outdoor cable without UV protection degrading within months

Per IEC 60364 / EN 50174, low-voltage wiring must use appropriate brackets and boxes. Low-voltage cables must maintain minimum separation from high-voltage wiring: 300 mm parallel runs, and crossing at 90° angles only. Low-voltage brackets (open-back) are typically used instead of standard electrical boxes.

1. Verify low-voltage brackets (not standard electrical boxes) are used for device locations

2. Check minimum 300 mm separation from all high-voltage wiring in parallel runs

3. Confirm cables cross high-voltage wiring at 90° angles only

4. Verify brackets are installed at correct heights for each device

5. Ensure adequate cable slack (300 mm / 12 inches) is left at each box for termination

6. Check that all penetrations through fire-rated assemblies are noted for fire-stopping

- Low-voltage cables bundled with high-voltage wiring (interference and code violation)

- Standard electrical boxes used instead of low-voltage brackets

- Insufficient cable slack at termination points

- No separation maintained at crossing points

Per IEC 60364 / EN 50174 and TIA-568, cables must be routed with proper bend radius (minimum 4x cable diameter for Cat5e/Cat6), supported at appropriate intervals, and fire-stopped at all penetrations through fire-rated walls, floors, and ceilings. Cable management must prevent damage from other trades.

1. Verify minimum bend radius is maintained (4x cable diameter for data cables)

2. Check cable supports at maximum 1.5 m intervals for horizontal runs

3. Confirm fire-stopping material is installed at all penetrations through fire-rated assemblies

4. Verify cables are protected from damage where exposed (conduit or armor)

5. Check that cables are labeled at both ends with permanent markers or labels

6. Ensure cables are not kinked, crushed, or excessively pulled (max 25 lbs pulling tension for Cat6)

- Sharp bends exceeding minimum bend radius (signal degradation)

- Missing fire-stopping at wall and floor penetrations

- Cables unsupported in long runs, sagging and stressing connections

- Cable jacket damaged during installation from excessive pulling force

Per TIA-568 and IEC 60364 / EN 50174, all cable terminations must be made properly: RJ45 connectors must follow T568A or T568B wiring standard (consistent throughout), terminal blocks must have proper wire stripping (6-8mm exposed conductor), and all connections must be secure without exposed copper beyond the terminal.

1. Verify RJ45 terminations follow consistent wiring standard (T568A or T568B throughout)

2. Check that untwisted pair length at RJ45 terminations does not exceed 13mm

3. Test all RJ45 connections with a cable tester for proper pin-out and continuity

4. Verify terminal block connections have proper strip length and secure clamping

5. Confirm doorbell wire connections are secure at transformer and button

6. Check thermostat wire terminations match the HVAC system terminal designations

- Inconsistent wiring standard (T568A mixed with T568B)

- Excessive untwist at RJ45 termination causing crosstalk

- Loose terminal block connections causing intermittent failures

- Wrong thermostat wire connected to wrong terminal (system malfunction)

Per IEC 60364, power supplies for low-voltage systems must be properly sized and installed. Doorbell transformers must match the doorbell voltage requirements (typically 16-24V AC). PoE switches for IP cameras must provide adequate wattage per port. Battery backup (UPS) is recommended for security systems.

1. Verify doorbell transformer voltage and VA rating match the doorbell requirements

2. Check PoE switch total power budget against connected camera requirements

3. Confirm PoE switch supports required standard (802.3af for 15W, 802.3at for 30W devices)

4. Verify UPS or battery backup is installed for security camera NVR and network switch

5. Check that all power supplies are accessible for maintenance

6. Confirm proper overcurrent protection for all low-voltage power supplies

- Undersized doorbell transformer causing weak ring or video doorbell reboots

- PoE switch power budget exceeded when all cameras are connected

- No battery backup for security system (fails during power outage)

- Power supply located in inaccessible location for maintenance

Per IEC 60364 / EN 50174 and manufacturer specifications, all low-voltage systems must be tested after installation. Cable testing must verify continuity, proper termination, and signal quality. Each device must be verified for proper operation in its intended function.

1. Test all data cables with a cable certifier or tester (continuity, wire map, length)

2. Verify each camera provides clear image at intended coverage angle

3. Test doorbell from outside — verify ring audibility throughout the home

4. Test thermostat communication with HVAC system (heating and cooling cycles)

5. Verify intercom communication between all stations

6. Test system operation during simulated power failure (battery backup)

7. Document all test results and create an as-built cable schedule

- Cable passes continuity but fails certification (marginal termination quality)

- Camera angle misses intended coverage area after final installation

- Doorbell not audible in all areas of the home

- Thermostat loses Wi-Fi connection intermittently (cable quality issue)
