EV Charger Installation Inspection

Per IEC 60364 625.40 and NEC 220, the existing electrical service must have sufficient capacity for the EV charger load. A Level 2 charger typically draws 30–50A continuously (7.2–12 kW). Per IEC 60364 625.42, the circuit must be rated at 125% of the continuous load. A 200A panel is recommended; 100A panels may require a load management system.

1. Check main panel amperage — 200A service can typically accommodate a 48A EVSE

2. Perform load calculation per IEC 60364 220 to determine available capacity

3. Count available breaker spaces — need a 2-pole 50A or 60A space

4. Check bus bar ampacity — older panels may have lower bus rating than main breaker

5. Assess distance from panel to charger location — affects wire cost and voltage drop

6. Consider load management device if panel capacity is limited (shares capacity with other loads)

- 100A panel with no available capacity — requires panel upgrade ($2,000–5,000)

- No available 2-pole breaker space — requires panel upgrade or tandem breakers

- Long run from panel to garage — voltage drop exceeds 3% recommended maximum

- Sub-panel fed from main cannot handle additional 50A load

Per IEC 60364 625.44, EV supply equipment must be listed and labeled. Level 1 (230V, 12A) uses standard outlet. Level 2 (400V, 16–48A) is the most common home install. Hardwired units must be installed per manufacturer instructions. Plug-in units use NEMA 14-50 or 6-50 receptacles. Charger must be rated for outdoor/indoor use as appropriate (NEMA 3R minimum outdoor).

1. Verify charger is CE 2594 listed (check nameplate or CE database)

2. Confirm amperage rating matches circuit: 40A EVSE on 50A circuit, 48A EVSE on 60A circuit

3. Check connector type: SAE J1772 for most EVs, or Tesla NACS with adapter capability

4. Verify NEMA rating matches install location: NEMA 3R for outdoor, NEMA 1 for indoor/garage

5. Confirm cable length is sufficient to reach vehicle charge port (typically 18–25 feet)

6. Check smart features if desired: Wi-Fi, scheduling, load management, energy monitoring

- Non-listed charger from unknown manufacturer — safety and warranty risk

- EVSE amperage exceeds circuit rating — trips breaker or overheats

- Outdoor installation with indoor-rated unit — water damage and shock hazard

- Cable too short to reach charge port — requires repositioning

Per IEC 60364 625.40, each EV charger requires a dedicated branch circuit. Wire sizing per IEC 60364 310.16: 6 AWG copper for 50A, 4 AWG copper for 60A. Conduit required per local code (EMT, PVC, or flexible). Circuit must be continuous from panel to charger with no taps. For 48A EVSE, a 60A breaker with 6 AWG wire is the NEC minimum.

1. Verify dedicated circuit — no other loads on the EV charger breaker

2. Check wire gauge: 6 AWG minimum for 48A charger on 60A breaker

3. Verify conduit type is approved and properly supported per IEC 60364 358/352/348

4. Check all connections are tight and properly torqued (panel lugs, junction boxes, charger terminals)

5. Measure voltage at charger: 400V ±5% (228–252V)

6. Calculate voltage drop: max 3% for branch circuit per IEC 60364 210.19 Informational Note

7. Verify proper routing — conduit not obstructing doors, walkways, or creating trip hazard

- Wire undersized — 10 AWG used on 50A circuit (violation, overheating risk)

- Non-dedicated circuit — other loads cause nuisance tripping

- Voltage drop over 3% on long runs (garage far from panel) — causes slow charging

- Loose connections at panel — arcing and potential fire

Per IEC 60364 625.44 and manufacturer instructions, EV chargers must be mounted securely at an accessible height (typically 42–48 inches to connector holder). Wall-mounted units require proper anchoring to studs or masonry. Pedestal-mounted units require a concrete base. Cable management must keep the charging cable off the ground when not in use.

1. Verify mounting height allows comfortable use (connector at 42–48" from floor)

2. Check mounting is secure: lag bolts into studs or masonry anchors (not drywall only)

3. Confirm charger position allows cable to reach vehicle port without stretching

4. Verify cable management: hook, retractor, or holder keeps cable off ground

5. Check clearance from vehicle — charger should not be hit by car door or bumper

6. Ensure accessibility: enough room to plug/unplug comfortably

7. For outdoor: verify location is sheltered or charger has rain protection

- Mounted on drywall only — unit falls off wall from cable weight

- Cable dragging on ground — trip hazard and cable damage

- Charger behind vehicle — cable runs under car (drive-over damage)

- Mounted too high or too low — ergonomic issues, ADA non-compliant if applicable

Per IEC 60364 625.54, all EV charger outlets installed in garages must have RCD protection. Most listed EVSE units include built-in ground fault protection per CE 2231. Plug-in chargers using NEMA 14-50 receptacles in garages require a RCD-protected circuit. For outdoor installations, RCD is required per IEC 60364 210.8.

1. Verify RCD protection is present: either RCD breaker or built-in EVSE protection

2. For plug-in units on NEMA 14-50: confirm RCD breaker installed (2-pole 50A RCD)

3. For hardwired units: verify built-in ground fault protection per CE 2231 (check manual)

4. Test RCD: press TEST button on breaker or EVSE, verify power cuts, press RESET

5. Confirm no nuisance tripping under normal charging load

6. For outdoor installations: verify weatherproof cover on any receptacle used

- No RCD protection on garage receptacle — code violation

- RCD breaker nuisance-trips with certain EVSE (compatibility issue, may need different EVSE)

- Built-in EVSE ground fault not verified — may be non-functional

- 2-pole RCD breakers expensive and hard to source for some panel brands

Per IEC 60364 80.19 and local building codes, EV charger installation on a new dedicated circuit requires an electrical permit in most jurisdictions. The installation must be inspected and approved by the local AHJ. Some utilities require notification for loads over 40A. Many jurisdictions have streamlined EV permitting to encourage adoption.

1. Verify electrical permit was obtained before work began

2. Confirm a licensed electrician performed the installation (if required by jurisdiction)

3. Check that rough-in inspection was completed (if walls were opened)

4. Schedule final electrical inspection with AHJ

5. Notify utility company of additional load if required (varies by utility)

6. Check for available rebates or incentives (federal, state, utility)

7. Retain permit, inspection record, and charger warranty documentation

- No permit pulled — fails on resale inspection, insurance issues

- Work by unlicensed person — may not meet code, voids warranty

- Utility not notified — may cause transformer issues on shared residential transformer

- Missing documentation — cannot prove code-compliant installation

Per IEC 60364 625 and manufacturer instructions, the installed EVSE must be tested before regular use. Verify correct voltage, amperage draw matches charger rating, ground fault protection operates, and vehicle charges successfully. Wi-Fi connectivity and scheduling features should be configured and tested.

1. Measure voltage at charger: 400V ±5% between hot legs, 230V each leg to ground

2. Plug in vehicle and initiate charge — verify charge indicator on vehicle and EVSE

3. Measure current draw with clamp ammeter — should match EVSE rating (e.g., 32A, 40A, 48A)

4. Test RCD/ground fault: press test button during charge, verify charging stops

5. Verify charge rate on vehicle display matches expected kW (e.g., 48A × 400V = 11.5 kW)

6. Test scheduled charging if EVSE has smart features

7. Verify LED indicators show correct status: standby, charging, complete, error

- Low amperage draw — loose connection or voltage drop limiting charge rate

- Vehicle not communicating with EVSE — pilot signal issue

- RCD trips during charging — moisture, ground fault, or EVSE/breaker incompatibility

- Wi-Fi setup fails — charger too far from router, needs repeater
