Ceiling Fan Installation Inspection

Per IEC 60364-5-55, outlet boxes or mounting points for ceiling fans must be rated for fan support and the fan weight. The mounting must be secured to a structural member (joist or beam) capable of supporting at least four times the fan weight. Fans must be installed per manufacturer specifications.

1. Verify the ceiling box/mounting point is rated for fan support

2. Confirm mounting is secured directly to a joist or with a listed fan brace

3. Check ceiling height — minimum 2.1 m from floor to blade tips

4. Verify adequate clearance — blades at least 450 mm from nearest wall

5. Assess ceiling slope — angled mounts needed for slopes over 20°

6. Confirm location allows proper airflow without obstructions

- Standard light fixture box used instead of fan-rated box (cannot support weight and vibration)

- Mounting on drywall/plasterboard only without structural support

- Fan installed too close to wall, causing blade turbulence

- Insufficient ceiling height creating safety hazard

Per IEC 60364, the fan circuit must have proper wiring for both fan motor and light kit. For separate fan/light control, a 3-conductor cable (with separate switch legs) or smart switch is required. The circuit must be properly protected by an appropriately sized breaker.

1. Verify power is off at the breaker before starting work

2. Check that wiring provides separate control for fan and light (3-conductor cable or dual switch)

3. Confirm wire gauge is appropriate for the circuit (typically 14 AWG for 15A or 12 AWG for 20A)

4. Verify the switch box has adequate space for dual switches or a fan/light combo switch

5. Check that the circuit is not overloaded with other loads

6. Test all wiring connections for continuity

- Single switch controlling both fan and light (no separate control)

- Undersized wiring for the combined fan/light load

- Missing or inadequate grounding

- Overloaded circuit shared with too many other devices

Per EN 60335-2-80 and manufacturer instructions, the correct mounting type must be selected: flush mount (for ceilings under 2.1 m+300mm), downrod mount (standard), or angled mount (for sloped ceilings). All hardware must be manufacturer-supplied or listed for the application.

1. Select correct mount type for ceiling height and slope

2. Install mounting bracket securely to the fan-rated box or structural mount

3. Verify all supplied hardware is used — no substitutions with generic hardware

4. Check that the mounting bracket is level and securely fastened

5. For downrod mounts, verify the downrod length places blades at optimal height

6. For angled mounts, confirm the ball-and-socket joint allows free movement

- Wrong mount type selected for the ceiling conditions

- Generic hardware substituted for manufacturer-supplied components

- Mounting bracket not level, causing wobble

- Downrod too short or too long for optimal airflow

Per IEC 60364, all electrical connections must be made with approved connectors. Wire colors must be correctly matched: black (hot/fan), blue (hot/light), white (neutral), and green or bare (ground). All connections must be secure and properly insulated.

1. Verify power is confirmed off with a non-contact voltage tester

2. Match wire colors correctly — black to black (fan), blue to blue (light), white to white (neutral)

3. Connect ground wire to the fan ground and mounting bracket ground

4. Use approved wire connectors (wire nuts or push-in connectors) for all connections

5. Tug-test all connections to verify they are secure

6. Tuck wires neatly into the canopy without pinching or sharp bends

- Incorrect wire color matching (fan runs when light switch is used)

- Ground wire not connected or not connected to both fan and bracket

- Loose wire nut connections that may arc or disconnect

- Wires pinched by canopy causing insulation damage

Per manufacturer specifications, all blades must be installed with equal spacing and identical orientation. Blade holders must be securely fastened to both the blade and the motor housing. Any wobble exceeding 3 mm (1/8 inch) at the blade tip indicates a balancing issue.

1. Install all blades with correct and equal spacing around the motor housing

2. Verify all blade screws are tightened securely (do not over-torque)

3. Check that all blades are identical in weight, shape, and pitch

4. Run the fan at all speeds and observe for wobble

5. If wobble is present, use a balancing kit (clip and weights) to correct

6. Verify blades are not warped — lay each blade on a flat surface to check

- Uneven blade spacing causing wobble and noise

- Loose blade screws that worsen over time

- Warped blades from moisture or manufacturing defect

- Missing balancing step leading to persistent wobble and motor wear

Per IEC 60364 and manufacturer specifications, all fan functions must be tested after installation: multiple speed settings, direction switch (summer/winter mode), and any remote or smart controls. The fan must operate quietly without excessive vibration at all speeds.

1. Test all speed settings (low, medium, high) for proper operation

2. Verify direction switch works (counterclockwise for summer, clockwise for winter)

3. Test light kit at all brightness levels if applicable

4. If remote control equipped, pair the remote and test all functions

5. Listen for unusual noises (clicking, humming, scraping) at each speed

6. Verify the fan does not cause light fixtures to flicker (indicates wiring issue)

- Direction switch not working or not accessible

- Humming noise at certain speeds (often capacitor issue)

- Remote control interference with other fans in the home

- Light kit flickering indicating loose connections or incompatible dimmer
