Soil testing and amendment
Critical itemSubmit a soil sample to the local cooperative extension or a certified soil lab to test pH, nutrient levels (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium), and organic matter content. The ideal lawn soil pH is 6.0-7.0. Amend with pelletized lime to raise pH or eleite sulfur to lower pH, following the lab's recommended application rates. Add 2-4" of compost to increase organic matter content if below 3%. Soil test results guide all subsequent amendment decisions.
