Gate Installation Checklist

Select the appropriate gate type based on the application: swing gates for most residential uses, sliding gates where space is limited, and double gates for wide driveways (minimum 10' opening for vehicles). Size vehicle gates at 12-16' wide and pedestrian gates at 36-48' wide. Match gate material (wood, vinyl, aluminum, steel, chain link) to the existing fence style for a cohesive appearance.

1. Measure the opening width and confirm the gate style fits the available swing or slide space

2. Verify the gate material matches the existing fence in style, color, and height

3. Check that vehicle gates provide at least 10' of clear opening for standard cars, 12'+ for trucks and trailers

4. Confirm pedestrian gates are at least 36" wide for comfortable single-person passage

5. For sliding gates, verify there is enough lateral space along the fence line for the gate to fully retract

- Choosing a swing gate where there is not enough clearance for the arc (check for grade changes, obstructions)

- Gate too narrow for intended use, especially for riding mowers or trailers

- Material mismatch between gate and fence creating an inconsistent look

- Forgetting to account for gate sag over time when selecting lightweight materials for wide openings

Gate posts must be significantly larger and deeper than standard line posts to handle the weight and stress of a swinging or sliding gate. Use 4x4 posts minimum for lightweight wood or vinyl pedestrian gates, and 6x6 posts for heavy gates or wide openings. Set gate posts a minimum of 36" deep in concrete (below the frost line in cold climates). The concrete footing should be 3x the post width in diameter and extend 2" above grade to shed water.

1. Verify gate posts are the correct size for the gate weight (4x4 minimum for light gates, 6x6 for heavy gates, steel posts for automated gates)

2. Confirm post hole depth is at least 36" or below the local frost line, whichever is deeper

3. Check that concrete footing is properly sized (minimum 10" diameter for 4x4 posts, 18" for 6x6 posts)

4. Verify posts are plumb in both directions using a level before concrete sets

5. Allow concrete to cure at least 48 hours (ideally 7 days) before hanging the gate

- Using standard line post sizes for gate posts, leading to leaning and sagging within months

- Setting posts too shallow, especially in frost-heave zones where posts shift seasonally

- Not using concrete or using insufficient concrete around gate posts

- Failing to brace posts plumb while concrete cures, resulting in a gate that does not swing properly

Select hinges rated for the gate weight and size. Use heavy-duty strap hinges or T-hinges for wood gates over 50 lbs, and ball-bearing hinges for metal gates. Pool gates require self-closing hinges per IRC Section R326 and ASTM F1908 to ensure the gate closes automatically from any open position. Install a minimum of three hinges for gates over 5' tall. Hinges must be lag-bolted or through-bolted to the post, not just screwed into surface wood.

1. Verify hinge weight rating meets or exceeds the gate weight (weigh or estimate the gate before purchasing hinges)

2. Confirm self-closing hinges are installed on all pool and spa enclosure gates

3. Test that self-closing hinges return the gate to the closed position from any angle of opening

4. Check that hinges are attached with lag bolts or through-bolts, not wood screws alone

5. Verify hinge pin cannot be removed from the outside (security concern for outward-swinging gates)

- Under-rated hinges that bend or fail under gate weight within the first year

- Pool gate hinges that are not truly self-closing, creating a code violation and safety hazard

- Using only two hinges on a tall or heavy gate, causing the gate to rack and bind

- Mounting hinges with short screws that pull out of the post over time

Hang the gate with proper clearance: 1/2" to 1" at the bottom (2" maximum over uneven ground) and a consistent 3/8" to 1/2" gap on the latch side. The gate must be plumb and level when closed, and must swing freely without dragging or binding. For sloped driveways, the bottom of the gate should follow the grade or use a V-shaped cut to clear the slope while minimizing the gap.

1. Measure bottom clearance with a spacer block; verify 1/2" to 1" uniform gap across the full width

2. Check the latch-side gap is consistent from top to bottom (3/8" to 1/2")

3. Use a level on the top rail of the gate to confirm it is level when closed

4. Swing the gate through its full range of motion and check for dragging, binding, or contact with the ground

5. Verify the gate returns to a centered, plumb position when closed without manual adjustment

- Bottom clearance too small, causing the gate to drag on pavement or bind on uneven ground

- Gate not plumb due to posts that are not perfectly vertical, causing the gate to swing open or closed on its own

- Uneven gaps that indicate the gate frame is racked or the posts are not parallel

- Gate sag on wide openings where the hinge side drops over time due to leverage

Install a self-latching mechanism that holds the gate securely closed. For pool gates, the latch must be self-closing and self-latching per IRC Section R326, with the release mechanism at least 54" above grade on the pool side (or otherwise inaccessible to small children). Standard pedestrian gate latches should be installed at 36" height for adult comfort. Add a keyed lock or deadbolt for security gates. Gravity latches work well for general use; magnetic latches for lightweight gates.

1. Verify the latch engages automatically when the gate swings closed without manual intervention

2. For pool gates, confirm the latch release is at least 54" above grade on the pool side

3. Test the latch from both sides to ensure it opens and closes smoothly

4. Check that the latch holds the gate firmly with no rattling or play

5. If a lock is installed, verify the key or combination operates smoothly and the deadbolt extends fully

- Pool gate latches installed too low, allowing children to reach the release mechanism

- Latch that does not align with the strike plate due to post settling or gate sag

- Self-latching mechanism that fails in cold weather due to ice or corrosion

- Lock installed without proper backing or reinforcement, making it easy to force

Select a gate operator rated for the gate weight and type (swing arm, slide, or underground). All automatic gate operators must comply with UL 325 safety standards, which require entrapment protection devices including photoelectric sensors, edge sensors, or other means to detect obstructions. Install an emergency manual release accessible from both sides. Electrical connection must be on a dedicated GFCI-protected circuit with proper burial depth for wiring (18" minimum in conduit per NEC).

1. Confirm the operator is rated for the gate weight and dimensions per the manufacturer specifications

2. Test all safety sensors by placing an object in the gate path during closing; the gate must stop and reverse

3. Verify the emergency manual release disengages the operator and allows manual gate operation

4. Check that the electrical supply is GFCI-protected and on a dedicated circuit

5. Test the gate through at least 10 full open/close cycles, checking for smooth operation, proper limit settings, and auto-reverse function

- Operator undersized for gate weight, leading to motor burnout or slow operation

- Safety sensors not installed or not properly aligned, creating an entrapment hazard (UL 325 violation)

- No emergency release or release that is inaccessible, trapping people during power outages

- Electrical wiring not in conduit or buried at insufficient depth, creating shock or damage risk
