Waterproofing and Moisture Protection

Surface Preparation

Critical item

In accordance with DIN 18533 and DIN 18534, the substrate must be structurally sound, clean, dry and free of sharp edges or protrusions before applying any waterproofing system. The substrate moisture content must be verified in accordance with CM measurement standards. DIN 18533-1 Section 7 specifies substrate requirements for below-grade waterproofing, while DIN 18534-1 Section 6 covers interior applications. Surface regularity must comply with DIN 18202 tolerances.

Below-Grade Waterproofing (DIN 18533)

Critical item

DIN 18533 classifies water exposure into four pressure classes: W1-E (ground moisture and non-accumulating seepage water), W2-E (accumulating seepage water with or without temporary impounding), W3-E (non-pressing water on ground-bearing slabs) and W4-E (water pressure from outside). The waterproofing design must match the actual water pressure class determined by the geotechnical report. Materials and application methods are specified in DIN 18533 Parts 2 and 3 for polymer-modified bituminous thick coatings (PMBC), sheet membranes and bentonite systems.

Interior Wet Room Waterproofing (DIN 18534)

DIN 18534 defines waterproofing requirements for interior wet areas and classifies them into four exposure classes: W0-I (domestic use, low exposure, e.g. residential kitchen), W1-I (moderate exposure, e.g. residential bathroom), W2-I (high exposure, e.g. public showers) and W3-I (very high exposure, e.g. commercial kitchens, swimming pools). The waterproofing system must be applied as a composite system (AIV — Abdichtung im Verbund) bonded directly to the substrate under tiles. DIN 18534 Parts 2 through 6 specify requirements for different material systems.

Liquid Applied Membranes

Liquid applied waterproofing membranes are regulated by DIN 18534-3 (interior composite waterproofing), DIN 18533-2 (PMBC for below-grade) and EN 14891 (liquid applied products for beneath ceramic tiling). Application must follow the manufacturer's technical data sheet and the respective abP or ETA approval. The two-coat application with contrasting colours is standard practice to ensure uniform coverage. Drying times between coats must be observed per manufacturer specifications and ambient conditions.

Sheet Membrane Systems

Sheet membrane waterproofing systems are covered by DIN 18533-3 (below-grade bituminous and polymer sheet membranes), DIN 18531-2 (roof membranes) and EN 14967 (flexible sheets for waterproofing). Materials include polymer-bitumen sheets (PYE/PYP), PVC, FPO/TPO and EPDM membranes. Installation methods include torch-applied, self-adhesive and mechanically fastened systems. Minimum overlap widths, welding parameters and substrate preparation are specified by both the standard and manufacturer requirements.

Joints and Penetrations

Critical item

All joints, penetrations and transitions in waterproofing systems must be detailed in accordance with DIN 18533, DIN 18534 and DIN 18195-9 (legacy detailing guidance). Movement joints require flexible waterproofing solutions capable of accommodating the expected movement range. Pipe and cable penetrations must use approved proprietary sealing systems (e.g. clamping flanges, flexible sleeves). DIN 18534-3 requires the use of system-compatible sealing tapes and prefabricated corner pieces at all transitions in wet room applications.

Testing and Acceptance

Critical item

Waterproofing systems must be inspected and accepted before being concealed by subsequent construction layers, in accordance with the VOB/B Section 4(10) requirement for inspection of concealed works. DIN 18533 and DIN 18534 specify acceptance criteria including visual inspection, film thickness verification, adhesion testing and leak testing. Documentation must include manufacturer product data sheets, batch numbers, application records and photographic evidence. For below-grade applications, waterproofing acceptance must occur before the protection layer and backfill are placed.
