Chimney must be structurally sound with intact flue liner. Damper must operate. Cap and spark arrestor required. Annual cleaning recommended.

1. Inspect chimney exterior — look for cracked or missing mortar, leaning, damaged cap

2. Check chimney cap — should have a cap with spark arrestor screen

3. Open and close damper — should move freely and seal when closed

4. Look up the flue with a flashlight — should be clean, no creosote buildup

5. Check for creosote buildup — more than 1/8" layer requires cleaning

6. Verify flue liner is intact (no cracks, gaps, or missing sections)

7. Check hearth extension — minimum 16" in front, 8" to each side

8. Verify combustible materials are at least 6" from the fireplace opening

9. Check for flashing at chimney-to-roof junction

- Cracked flue liner (carbon monoxide can enter living space — DEADLY)

- Heavy creosote buildup (chimney fire risk)

- Missing chimney cap (rain, animals, and debris enter)

- Damper stuck or missing (energy loss when not using fireplace)

- Damaged chimney masonry (structural failure risk)

- Combustibles too close to fireplace opening

- Missing or damaged flashing (roof leaks at chimney)
