Layout and design

Design walkways with a minimum width of 36" for single-person passage and 48" for two people walking side by side. ADA-accessible paths require 44" minimum clear width. Use gentle curves for a natural appearance in landscape settings and straight lines for formal entries. Mark the layout with spray paint or stakes and string. Consider traffic patterns: the path from the driveway to the front door should be the widest and most direct. Slope walkways away from structures at 1-2% cross-slope for drainage.

Excavation and base preparation

Critical item

Excavate to the required depth based on the surface material: 7-8" for paver walkways (4" compacted base + 1" sand bedding + 2-3" paver), 4-6" for gravel paths (4" base + 2" gravel surface). Remove all organic material including grass, roots, and topsoil from the excavated area. Slope the excavated bed away from structures at 1-2% grade to ensure drainage. Compact the subgrade with a plate compactor before adding base material.

Base material and compaction

Critical item

Install 4" of crushed stone base material (3/4" minus or road base) that contains a mix of stone sizes and fines for proper compaction. Spread and compact in 2" lifts using a plate compactor, making at least 2-3 passes per lift. Check grade with a string line or level after each lift. The finished base should be uniformly compacted, level side to side (with the planned cross-slope), and at the correct depth to accommodate the bedding sand and pavers.

Edge restraint installation

Critical item

Install edge restraints before placing bedding sand or pavers. Options include plastic paver edging (most common for residential, secured with 10" spikes every 12"), aluminum edging (more durable, best for curves), or concrete curbing (most permanent). Edge restraints must be installed on the compacted base at the correct height so the top of the restraint aligns with the top of the finished paver surface. Restraints must be staked securely into the compacted base or undisturbed soil beyond the excavation.

Surface material installation

Critical item

Spread 1" of bedding sand (coarse concrete sand, not play sand) over the compacted base. Screed the sand level using two 1" pipes as guides and a straight board to strike off the excess. Lay pavers in the chosen pattern starting from a straight edge or corner: herringbone pattern provides the strongest interlock and best resistance to shifting, running bond is simplest, and basketweave is traditional. Cut pavers at edges using a wet saw or paver splitter for clean, precise cuts. Work from laid pavers to avoid disturbing screeded sand.

Joint filling and finishing

Sweep polymeric sand into all paver joints using a push broom, working the sand into joints from multiple directions. Compact the pavers with a plate compactor (using a rubber pad to protect the paver surface) to vibrate sand deep into joints. Sweep additional sand and compact again. Activate the polymeric sand with a gentle water mist per the manufacturer's instructions (typically a fine spray for 30-60 seconds, then a harder rinse). Avoid leaving excess sand on paver faces, which can cause hazing.

Drainage verification

Critical item

Verify water flows away from all adjacent structures and does not puddle on the walkway surface. The walkway should have a 1-2% cross-slope for sheet drainage and a positive longitudinal slope to an outlet (lawn, garden bed, or drain). Check that the base material is free-draining (crushed stone, not clay). In areas where the walkway interrupts natural drainage flow, install a perforated drain pipe at the low side of the walkway, connected to a proper outlet such as a dry well or storm drain.
